Frequently asked
Questions
The place
What is Stilkrans?
Stilkrans is a small villa for two, being built on a granite rockface above Wilderness, on the Garden Route in South Africa.
One bedroom, one bathroom, about 95m², between the ocean and the Outeniqua mountains. It opens in 2027.
Lindl and I are building it and writing about it as we go: what we choose, what costs more than it should, and what we get wrong.
Is Stilkrans a luxury villa?
Yes and no. Everything in it is real and made to last: solid timber, stone, aged brass, deep-set windows, nothing thin or fake. But it doesn't work like a luxury resort or hotel.
It's small and private: one bedroom, no front desk, no restaurant, no room service, no menu of amenities. The care goes into the things you touch every day, the weight of a handle, stone underfoot, a room that holds you. Not into a list of services.
Is it a wellness retreat or a spa?
No. There’s no spa, no treatments, no programme, no schedule.
Stilkrans is a well-made house you stay in. You cook, read, swim, sleep, and do nothing in particular. The good feeling comes from the space and the pace, not from a service.
Where is it, exactly?
On Constantia Drive in Wilderness, on the Garden Route: the coastal stretch of South Africa's Western Cape between the sea and the Outeniqua mountains.
It's about 25 minutes from George Airport. This is coastal nature: ocean, forest, and fynbos. It is not wine country.
Can you walk to shops and coffee?
Yes. Wilderness village is a few minutes' walk down the hill.
The nearest coffee is Commonage, just down the road.
The stay
Who is it for?
Two people. Mostly couples who want time that feels unhurried and full.
It suits people who'd rather stay in one good place than tick off ten attractions. It doesn't suit families, children, or groups. There's one bedroom, and the whole place is intentionally built around two.
How many people can stay?
Two people. One bedroom, one bathroom.
Is check-out really at 3pm?
Yes. 3pm, not the usual 10am.
A 10am check-out rushes you out on the morning you'd most want to stay. At 3pm you get a slow last day: coffee, a swim, no packing before you've woken up properly. We lose a bit of occupancy for it. That trade is the point.
What's in the villa?
One bedroom, one bathroom, a connected living and kitchen space, a study corner, and a deck with a pool.
Real kitchen tools. Books meant to be read. Materials like stone, timber, oak, and slate, chosen to age well and feel good under your hand. There's no restaurant, no front desk, no room service. It's a house, not a hotel.
What will a stay actually do for me?
Probably leave you less frazzled than you arrived. That's it, and that's enough.
Two slow days away reset your nervous system the way sleep does. It's real, but temporary. We don't claim Stilkrans heals burnout or changes your life. It's a genuinely good place to be for a few days, and worth coming back to.
Practical
When does it open?
It opens in 2027. It's under construction now.
In the meantime we write a build journal as the house goes up, and we'll let you know when booking opens.
Follow alongWhat does it cost? Any rules on pets or minimum stay?
The current plan is €375 a night.
No pets. Minimum stay is four nights. Children: Stilkrans is for two adults, so it isn’t set up for kids.
What does “Stilkrans” mean?
It’s Afrikaans. Stil means still or calm; krans is a cliff or rockface.
So Stilkrans is roughly “still rockface”, which is where it sits, on granite above Wilderness.
